The Grade 11 Geographers arrived at Lyon Airport bright and early on Monday, 17th February 2025, for their field trip to Spain, where they collected data for their Internal Assessment and experienced Spain’s urban and rural culture. Organized by Mr. Dunn and accompanied by Mrs. Fournier, the trip included time in Madrid (tapas, anyone?) and a visit to the Águila Caves before reaching the Gredos Centre in Navarredonda de Gredos (Ávila), 1,500m above sea level.
Students gathered primary data to assess the impacts of tourism on two local villages and in the mountains, specifically footpath erosion at the Plataforma de Gredos (1,800m), where they faced foggy, cold conditions with lingering snow. They also engaged in CAS activities, including Ephemeral Art (Creativity), Archery (Activity), and an impressive cleanup of the local national park (Service), collecting over seven full bags of trash!
Additionally, the group traveled to Salamanca (two hours away) to explore the city’s rich history, culture, and sights before departing early on Friday morning.
Mr. Dunn and Mrs. Fournier would like to express their gratitude—it was an absolute pleasure to accompany the Grade 11 students, who were a credit to themselves and ISL. Centre staff shared highly positive feedback, and the students thoroughly enjoyed the trip, which was a first-time visit to Spain for some. The Geographers now have excellent data for their upcoming IB Diploma IA work.
