In Grade 5 we are currently working on the transdisciplinary theme of “Where We Are in Place and Time”. Our unit’s focus is about how the knowledge we gain from space exploration affects our understanding of the universe and has a direct impact on our life on Earth.
After learning about how spacesuits keep astronauts alive, we decided to focus on the insulating nature of spacesuits and spacecrafts. The students learned about heat transfer, then they designed insulated space capsules and measured the heat lost from hot water over a 30-minute period. We will use this data in maths class to plot line graphs and to compare the efficiency of our space capsules against our control (a regular paper cup).
